Awardees

In the spirit of celebrating neighbors, we would like to honor the following organizations and individuals as heros, leaders, and advocates in the field of supportive housing.

Housing Works’ HERO AWARD:

Remi Kessler

Cinema Libre

The Housing Works’ HERO AWARD goes to individuals who have made significant, genuinely “heroic” contributions of time, skill, and talent directly assisting our homeless participants. Their gift of service makes a tangible difference in improving the quality of our folks’ health and mental health… leading them to greater independence and taking maximum control of their own lives.

TOM McGUINESS COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP AWARD

SYSTEM CHANGER:

Nkem Ndefo

The Tom McGuiness Community Leadership Award is presented each year to individuals or groups that embody the spirit of community and respect for each person as we do whatever it takes for as long as it takes to fulfill our mission to create housing options for people with limited resources. Tom was a founding board member of Housing Works; the extraordinary example of his spirit is memorialized in this award.

Nkem Ndefo is the founder and president of Lumos Transforms and creator of The Resilience Toolkit, a model that promotes embodied self-awareness and self-regulation in an ecologically sensitive framework and social justice context. Licensed as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Midwife, Nkem also has extensive post-graduate training in complementary health modalities and emotional therapies. She brings an abundance of experience as a clinician, educator, consultant, and community strategist to innovative programs that address trauma and build resilience for individuals, organizations, and communities throughout the US. Nkem is known for her unique ability to connect with people of all types by holding powerful healing spaces, weaving complex concepts into accessible narratives, and creating synergistic and collaborative learning communities that nourish people’s innate capacity for healing, wellness, and connection. She served on the Los Angeles County Trauma-and Resilience-Informed Systems Change Initiative Workgroup. She is currently an advisor to the Strategic Planning Committee of Trauma Informed Los Angeles and is developing a pilot violence-prevention academy for peer support workers as part of Los Angeles County Department of Public Health’s Trauma Prevention Initiative.
